May Club Night, Monday the 25th with Vai Mai Natana

CHANGE OF SPECIAL GUEST BAND!

I somehow got my dates confused and Hobnail Trio is coming in September, not May. So instead we will have wonderful local folk duo Vai Mai Natana, who first played at the hall to rave reviews one year ago.

Vai Mai Natana

This hot folk duo of Mema and Nathan Boston delivers an exceptional music experience that you will feel at your very core as this is where they express from. They focus on acoustic arrangements of Mema’s original works with the odd quirky cover all delivered with the sincerest of love for sharing their craft. Musically, it’s kinda like The Rescues formed a love triangle with Leonard Cohen and Andres Segovia. It is a most delicious blend of quirky beauty that will make you laugh and probably cry in the same night. Expect soaring vocals with carefully placed guitars supporting poetic lyrics in the sincerest of love for sharing music with you.

As this is a local duo, instead of a traveling trio, tickets will be $15, not $20. If you have already purchased and paid for tickets, please contact me for a refund. Or to sort out whatever you prefer. My apologies for this confusion. I’d say it won’t happen again, but I really can’t promise that!

Doors open at 6:45. Floor singers first half. $15 cash or bank transfer. Email whangateaufolk@gmail.com to secure your seat or sign up for a floor spot. Looking forward to seeing everyone on the 25th!

Whangateau Folk special event: Penni Feather and WilkieMac

Penni Feather & WilkieMac

One show, two acts!

The WilkieMac duo and singer/songwriter Penni Feather perform separately and together in an evening that spans Celtic and contemporary folk, blues, originals – and a few surprises.

WilkieMac use a range of instruments and vocals to take you on a journey through originals, covers, humour, and songs reflecting their celtic roots. From being the featured concert guest at Te Rangi Festival in Hawkes Bay, through to opening for Australian band Ukulele Death Squad for one of their pre-WOMAD tour gigs, it’s been an exciting and diverse year for the duo so far.

Penni Feather is known for her soulful interpretation of songs – and irreverent stage presence. Although she’s had a few years away from the NZ folk scene, she has previously guested at several NZ folk festivals. Recently she had a one-woman cabaret show in the Hamilton Arts Festival and performed at the Raglan Blues Festival. Grounded in folk and blues, her originals lean towards alt.country.

Earlier this year the two Raglan acts collaborated for a concert in the 2025 Hamilton Arts Festival. They so enjoyed weaving instruments and harmonies on each others’ songs, they’ve teamed up again for some northern gigs – and a first-time trip to the Whangateau Hall.

Levi Lights On at Auckland Folk Festival

Levi Lights On at Auckland Folk Festival

Samoan-born Michael Levin Sesega, known professionally as Levi Lights On, is a compelling songwriter and storyteller based in Auckland, New Zealand. His music is defined by emotional depth, vivid lyrical imagery and a commanding vocal presence that invites listeners into an intimate and reflective space.

Blending elements across genres, Levi crafts songs that resonate on both a personal and universal level. His work explores themes of identity, connection, and the very essence of humanity. This is music from the soul, to the soul.

The evening will of course begin with our usual slate of delightful local performers! If you fancy yourself one such, do drop me a line and I shall add you to the list! (Sorry, for the florid language, I’ve been watching too much Bridgerton today.)

What: Club Night with Levi Lights On

Tickets: $15 cash or bank transfer.

Whangateau Folk Club Night! Monday, 19 August

First off: yes, this is the WRONG night for a Whangateau Folk Club. But I have a very good reason for this. I’ll be away on a swim safari in Rarotonga for our regular club night and after being away for so long and missing out on so much great music, I couldn’t bear to miss another. Also, I’m so excited to be back in our lovely hall!

Secondly: we have something VERY SPECIAL this month! Bonnie Hurunui and Nathan Boston, of White Chapel Jak, are back up in Leigh, and they have been creating new music together, and working up some duo material. And they have agreed to come debut these new musical delights for us at Whangateau! I cannot emphasise enough how very very much you need to be there for this. There are not enough exclamation points in the world for me to get across how exciting this is. I’m so overcome I can barely string two sentences together.

Doors open at 6:45pm for a 7:00pm start. $15 on the door, no bookings necessary, but it would help me to judge the amount of biscuits to get for half time if you email whangateaufolk@gmail.com to let me know you’re coming! See you there!

Moon Moth

Moon Moth

In 2017 Moon Moth formed in Yorkshire, England and quickly developed a unique style through their fusion of folk, jazz and pop. With this, their original songs take you on a mystical journey through tales of love, adventure and exploration.
Having performed around their local area developing their craft, Moon Moth then expanded their horizions, taking their sound to the South East of Spain in 2018, where they established residency gigs in various venues in the City centre and surrounding areas of Alicante.
With rythm guitar, punchy sax lines and smooth solos, combined with their stunning vocal harmonies, Moon Moth have often been described to share a similar charm to that of The Beautiful South.
Their live shows display an air of honesty with a slight theatrical edge, telling personal stories of their experiences from sleeping in caves, to living on hippy communes.
Dan (vocals/guitar) and Jade (lead vocals/sax) have both been practising their musicianship for over 25 years, performing and touring worldwide in various groups and appearing on formats such as the BBC. With a powerful vocal range and immense stage presence, you cannot help but to watch in awe the prfessionalism of Moon Moth. This always shines through as they give every performance 100% whether there are 5 or 500 people in their audience.
Through parts of England and Spain Moon Moth are known as a heartfelt and thought-provoking duo who aspire to be continually inspired by nature and new experiences and in turn, inspire others with uplifting tales of their surreal travelling ventures.
